Is a 10-Minute Mile a Good Pace?
A 10-minute mile (about 6:13 per kilometre) is a solid, sustainable pace for many recreational runners — quick enough to be real training, easy enough to hold a conversation early in a run. If you can run at 10:00/mile comfortably, you are in good company.
What a 10:00/mile pace gives you
| Distance | Time at 10:00/mile |
|---|---|
| 5K (3.1 mi) | ~31:04 |
| 10K (6.2 mi) | ~1:02:08 |
| Half marathon | ~2:11:06 |
| Marathon | ~4:22:13 |
So a steady 10-minute mile puts a sub-32 5K and a sub-2:15 half well within reach.
Is it "good"? It depends on the goal
- New runner: absolutely — many people start slower and build to this.
- Weight-loss / general fitness: ideal, since it's a sustainable effort.
- Racing for time: a great base to train down from toward 9:00 or faster.
Speed is relative. A pace that's easy for one runner is a hard effort for another, and both are training well.
