What Is an Average Running Pace?

There is no single "normal" running pace — it depends on your fitness, the distance, the terrain and even the weather. But there are useful ranges. For most recreational runners, an easy pace falls between 9:00 and 12:00 per mile (about 5:30–7:30 per kilometre). New runners often start nearer 12:00–15:00 per mile, and that is completely fine.

Typical paces by level

LevelPace / milePace / km
Beginner12:00–15:007:30–9:20
Recreational9:00–12:005:30–7:30
Experienced7:30–9:004:40–5:30
Competitive6:00–7:303:45–4:40

These are easy/steady ranges. Your race pace will be faster than your everyday training pace.

Pace changes with distance

You can hold a quicker pace for a 5K than for a marathon. As distance goes up, sustainable pace comes down — which is exactly why a 5K personal best feels very different from a steady long run.

Age and other factors

Pace naturally eases with age, but consistency matters far more than your birth year. Heat, hills, wind, sleep and how recently you ate all move your pace around day to day. Judge yourself on effort, not just the clock.

Find your own pace

The fastest way to know your average pace is to measure a run and divide time by distance. Drop your numbers into the pace calculator to see your pace per km or mile and your speed — then use it to set realistic race-time goals.
